What I’m Reading this Summer…
This summer, I’ve been diving into a book that’s not your typical beach read - though I did read it on the beach in San Diego!
I’m honored to be a book ambassador for Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals by Lindsay Dahl. This book is more than just a compelling read - it’s a wake-up call.
As an ambassador, I was fortunate to receive an early copy, and I’ve been soaking up every page. It’s informative, eye-opening, and incredibly empowering. Lindsay has a gift for weaving together vivid storytelling and science in a way that pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages.
I know Lindsay personally from my time at Beautycounter (now Counter) where she was the Head of Mission. And I had the privilege of working with her during two advocacy days at the California State Capitol - one focused on pushing for ingredient transparency in cleaning products, and the other for safer fragrance laws. Her leadership and dedication to health-protective policy left and educating others is an inspiration to me - and she’s one of the reasons I do the work I do today.
Here’s a sneak peek at what’s covered in the book:
🧴It’s about toxic chemicals hiding in everyday products.
Lindsay shows how harmful chemicals, ones backed by decades worth of peer-reviewed science and linked to cancer, hormone issues, infertility, are still allowed in our homes, beauty products, kids’ toys, and everyday items, often without us knowing.
⚖️It's about the fight to change the laws that fail to protect us.
Cleaning House tells the behind-the-scenes story of how outdated U.S. laws let toxic chemicals slip into our products — and how brave scientists, activists, and everyday people are fighting back.
⛓️💥It's not only about shopping "clean" — it’s about fixing the system.
Lindsay makes it clear: we shouldn't have to memorize chemical names or pay more to protect ourselves. We need to fix the broken system so that safe products are the default — not the exception.
🌍It connects personal health to bigger issues like climate change and social justice.
The chemicals that harm us also pollute the planet and hit vulnerable communities the hardest. Cleaning House shares stories from the frontlines of communities, connecting the fight for safer products as the fight for environmental justice.
💚It's full of real, hopeful actions — not fear.
Instead of making people feel overwhelmed, Cleaning House empowers us with real science, practical tips, and ways to create lasting change — for ourselves, our families, and future generations.
Whether you’re new to this topic or have been on the non-toxic living journey for a while, Cleaning House is a must-read. It’s the kind of book that informs, inspires, and ignites change.
📚 Pre-orders are open now, and it officially launches on August 5th.
